Web 2.0: Social Media and Design Practice

There are few things, if any, that we’d enjoy talking about more than Web 2.0 within the design practice. It’s the foundation of our company - and what we’re ultimately most passionate about. So when the ASID asked me to give a webinar on the subject, I of course agreed.
The webinar, aptly titled “Web 2.0: Social Media and Design Practice”, took place this past Wednesday. Given that the design industry gets a bad reputation for being “ironically far behind on the social media front“, we were pleased to hear that 89% of the webinar’s participants have either a Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter account - and that 44% maintain their own blogs. Not a bad start.
With only an hour to address an infinite amount of material, we focussed on 1. the social web as a marketing / branding tool, and 2. the social web as a productivity tool. We discussed some of the basics involving business applications for Social Media - and from Facebook Pages to Twitter accounts, blogging, etc.
Seeing as Designer Pages is an avid promoter of Cloud computing services (as opposed to desktop applications, in-house servers, etc.), this was addressed within the Webinar. Crains New Yorkrecently published an article on Cloud computing - featuring Designer Pages as one of the NY start-ups using it to “reap savings and boost speed to market.” As co-founder Avi Flombaum stated in the interview, to build an in-house system with equivalent computing power would have cost about $10 million. Long story short, Designer Pages wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for Cloud computing. How’s that for a testimonial?
Since the Webinar was only 90 minutes in total, a lot was left unsaid.
