Armory Show Opening Preview

Hudson-bound? It’s that time of year, again. Yesterday marked Day 1 of the Armory Show and Day 2 of Armory Arts Week in New York City. Changing out of jeans and into suits and sleek dresses, the Designer Pages team headed to Pier 94 for last night’s opening party. The preview was packed, making it difficult to really take-in the art; and the overpopulation of art-world elite and celebrities (Kyra Sedgwick for instance) didn’t help either. But we’re not complaining. We had the pleasure of seeing some of our friends at MMPI – our collaborators on www.neocon.com, and enjoyed a drink (or two) in the VIP Lounge, furnished by B&B Italia. Fortunately the show remains up through Sunday, giving us a bit of time for a second (hopefully less packed) visit.

Over the next couple of days and throughout the weekend, a full scheule of events will unfold. If you’re not familiar, the Armory Show is one of the most important international art marketplaces in the world and 2010 marks its 12th anniversary. Today marked the opening of VOLTA NY, the Armory Show’s sister art fair - a tightly focused, boutique exhibition featuring exclusively solo projects. This year’s theme: No Guts, No Glory”, extolling “the artist and galleries who still refuse to play it safe in troubled economic times.”

Admission to the Armory Show is $30; VOLTA NY is an extra $10. In our minds, it’s well worth it for the art and people-watching alike.
